Guide to Chongqing Huangguan Escalator: Tickets, Metro Directions & Quick Tips

Huangguan Elevator 皇冠大扶梯

The Huangguan Escalator connects Lianglukou with the Caiyuanba area in Yuzhong District. It’s one of Chongqing’s most distinctive pieces of urban transport, and for me, one of the most direct ways to feel how steep and layered this city really is.

The escalator is about 112 meters long, with a vertical rise of around 53 meters. The ride takes roughly 2 minutes and 30 seconds. Official information describes the incline as about 30 degrees, but when I rode it, it honestly felt closer to 45 degrees. That steep angle is exactly what makes it interesting. It’s not just a way to get from one place to another; it gives you a very physical sense of Chongqing’s terrain.

Getting There

The entrance to the Huangguan Escalator is inside Lianglukou Metro Station, so the easiest way to get there is by metro. Take Line 1 or Line 3 to Lianglukou Station.

If you’re coming from Liziba, you can take Line 2 to Niujiaotuo Station, then transfer to Line 3 and continue to Lianglukou. There are also bus routes from Liziba, but the route is less straightforward, so I wouldn’t recommend it unless you’re already comfortable with local buses in Chongqing.

Once you arrive at Lianglukou Station, head toward Exit 4 and follow the signs. It only takes about a minute to reach the escalator entrance from there.

One thing to note: from this direction, you’ll be riding the escalator downward, from Lianglukou toward Caiyuanba. If you want to experience it in the opposite direction, you can buy another ticket after reaching the Caiyuanba side and ride back up.

How to Buy a Ticket

The fare is RMB 2 one way, and there are three ways to pay:

  • Scan the Alipay public transport QR code directly at the turnstile.
  • Show your Alipay or WeChat payment code to be scanned at the gate.
  • Scan the on-site QR code using WeChat to buy a digital ticket.

How Long to Spend Here

The Huangguan Escalator is not the kind of attraction where you need to set aside a lot of time. The ride itself takes about two and a half minutes, and even with buying a ticket and taking a quick look around, 10 minutes is enough.

I’d suggest treating it as a quick stop on the way to other Yuzhong District sights, such as Liziba or TESTBED 2. It works best as a short, practical, slightly unusual Chongqing experience rather than a full attraction on its own.

If your schedule is too tight and you don’t have time to visit in person, you can also watch the video I recorded during my ride first.
